It takes place on the beaches of Normandy, a place where real soldiers bled and died, and yet it, like Destiny's tower, is a video game menu, except the loot box thing makes it even more videogame-y than the Tower. Of course, on another level, Call of Duty's HQ is just completely weird. 1 arena complete with room to spectate, making it at once part of the standard multiplayer experience and something else entirely. The best feature is likely the pit, which is a 1 vs. You can practice with the game's various scorestreaks, which is likely the only chance chumps like me will have to use them. You can, for example, shoot at targets or watch people open loot boxes, the former of which is a fun diversion and the latter of which is too bizarre to really even consider. Call of Duty's HQ, on the other hand, has some things to actually do while you're hanging out. It's a well-glorified menu, to be sure, but it amounts to going around and checking quest vendors while occasionally snagging yourself some sort of easter egg. In Destiny, the Tower serves to some degree like a glorified menu. On one level, the HQ is a great take on the concept of a Destiny-style social space, something we're also seeing in games like NBA 2K18 and Splatoon 2. I hope they get this thing fixed soon, because there are some interesting things going on here. That's frustrating for people who want to race to the top as quickly as possible, and it means that even the casual observer will know that something isn't right here.
Other quests like "commend a fellow soldier" also go obviously unfilled. Call of Duty: WW2 offers the laughable quest of having to watch other players open loot boxes, which is now even more laughable because you can't even do it. There are practical considerations here, as well.
